About

My Approach and Services

I work with adult individuals and couples in Washington state as both a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC) and certified nutritionist (CN). I graduated from Bastyr University with a master’s of science in nutrition and a master’s of arts in counseling psychology. I received my bachelor's of science in physiology/biology from the University of Washington. My therapeutic work focuses on working with individuals struggling with disordered eating, outpatient level eating disorders, and challenging relationships to food, body, and movement which I approach from a weight neutral and Intuitive Eating lens. In addition, I work with various other mental health concerns including depression, anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, relationship concerns, trauma, personal growth and identity, life transitions, assimilation, codependency, boundary setting, emotional regulation, grief/loss, and more. I also work with adult couples who are struggling with aspects of their relationship including communication, trust, emotional security, and life style transitions. Any of these concerns I approach from an attachment based perspective and integrate a humanistic and process based approach. Overall, I gravitate towards a psychodynamic and humanistic approach. I integrate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Existential Psychotherapy, Attachment Theory, relational theories, and somatic theories in my work. I am not a solution focused therapist but rather a process based therapist who is interested in guiding you in your process of self-discovery. My hope is to empower you in building a life that is in congruence of your values, and process through the resilient ways in which you have learned to adapt to and/or cope with this world. I find that the more we are able to truly see ourselves, without judgement, the more we are able to make decisions from a place of authenticity versus reactivity. Nutrition counseling sessions can include any of the following topics: - General nutrition support for medical conditions (incl.: cardiovascular health, gut and digestive health, adrenal health, metabolic health, fertility, and more) - Basic nutrition information - Balancing meals - Education on whole foods selection and preparation - Recipes and meal plan ideas (incl.: vegetarian, vegan, whole foods, etc.) - Supportive nutrition for mental health - Learning and processing HAES® and IE frameworks - Support for disordered eating or eating disorders - Restoring relationship with food and body - Movement goals and physical activity - And more! Fees and payment: 50 minute Individual Psychotherapy session: $130* 50 minute Couples Psychotherapy session: $140* 50 minute Nutritional Counseling session: 140* *Reduced rates may be available for students, those unemployed/underemployed, or others who demonstrate financial need. Please let me know if a conversation about a reduced rate would be helpful for you. Please be mindful that your ability to pay the full fee allows me to provide reduced rate spots for those who are not able to do the same. This allows me/us to support our community by providing accessible healthcare. Contact me to schedule a free 15 minute initial phone consultation to see if we are a good fit. A credit card is required to be on-file in order to begin therapy. Vanessa is an out-of-network provider, which means Vanessa Steffny Counseling and Nutrition, PLLC does not bill insurance for payment. However, through Bene Therapy, I am able to accept some insurance providers. You may be able to access out-of-network benefits on your insurance plan. If you choose to use your insurance for reimbursement, it is your responsibility to contact your insurance provider to determine out-of-network benefits and claims processes.
